Overview

Volvo has launched a new improved version of the XC90 at the beginning of 2018 in India. The SUV now comes with 2.0-litre turbo-diesel with Power-Pulse technology which makes it one of the best premium vehicles in the segment. There are altogether five variants- two petrol and three diesel configuration. The base model is XC90 D5 Momentum currently available at an Ex-Showroom price range of INR 80.90 lakh, the XC90 T8 Excellence, on the other hand, is the top-end version coming with a price tag of INR 1.31 crore. This premium SUV is available in fifteen attractive colours including Ice White Metallic, Bright Silver Metallic, Twilight Bronze Metallic, Electric Silver Metallic, Passion Red, Luminous Sand Metallic and many other options. Overall it is a very stylish and advanced automobile which is expected to dominate the Indian roads.

Exterior

The exteriors of XC90 are not only an eye-pleaser but also come with a robust body and all the top-notch safety features. The most remarkable feature is the addition of the radiator chrome grille offering a contemporary yet sturdy look to the SUV. It also bears the centrally placed Volvo’s new logo. Along with this, you find the signature 'Thor Hammer' headlamps which are a trademark of all the premium Volvo automobiles. The body coloured bumper, rear view mirrors, and door handles offer an aesthetic appeal. Other significant additions include eye-catching roof rail, twin exhaust slots with two tips in each slot nicely integrated into the bumper, and integrated antennae.

Interior

The interiors of XC90 perfectly complement the exterior. It comes with tastefully crafted soft leather upholstery with selective use of fine-wood plating to break the monotonous approach. The car has an exclusive gear knob made of Orrefors crystal glass making it class apart. It also has a diamond-shaped start & stops button with unique rotary controls for the suspensions. The 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system performs most of the car functions including navigation, safety, and entertainment. It helps in keeping the dashboard uncluttered with only nine buttons while the first edition of this series had 32 keys. The top variant has 19-speaker Bowers and Wilkins audio unit to offer premium listening experience to the riders.

Engine

XC90 comes with two types of engines- 2L Twin Turbo-charged Diesel version with Power Pulse and 2L Turbocharged Petrol Hybrid configuration. The diesel engine produces a maximum power of 232 bhp@4000 rpm and torque of 480 Nm@1750-2250 rpm. These values amplify to 398 bhp@5700 rpm maximum power and 640 Nm@1740 rpm in the Hybrid engine. In both the cases, the power gets transmitted by 8-speed automatic transmission gearbox reaching a maximum speed of 230 Kmph. The hybrid engine reaches 0 to 100 Kmph in just 5.6 seconds. The SUV has all the advanced safety features like adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning system, the presence of 9-airbags, and pilot assistance.

Pros and Cons

Here are some of the advantages of owning XC90 premium SUV from Volvo.

• The vehicle has solid built and elegant interiors which offer refined riding experience makes it glide through the rough patches of Indian roads. • The safety features in this car are one of the most advanced in the segment and have fetched 5 star NCAP ratings. • The 9-inch infotainment system with 19-speaker Bowers and Wilkins unit provides superb audio experience. • The cabin is quite spacious with enough leg room for all the occupants.

There are some disadvantages as well in the XC90.

• Many top-end premium SUV offers 6-cylinder engine at this price. The 4-cylinder diesel engine cannot provide the creaminess of its arch rivals. • Volvo has only 15 dealer network in India which need serious improvement to keep up the sales. • The price is too high in the top-spec T8 Excellence (INR 1.31 crore) of XC90.

Finally, we can say that the XC90 is one of the best premium SUV currently available in India. However, the ownership cost is too high for the majority of the Indians.
