Volvo has announced the launch of the latest version of the most successful mid-sized SUV, XC60 in September 2018. This automobile will get assembled in the Bangalore facility of the company by the second quarter of the FY 2019. Previously it was introduced to the Indian market at the end of 2017 and contributed to approximately 25 per cent of the overall sales of Swedish automobile giant in India. This time, Volvo has also introduced a new base-spec Momentum to the already successful XC60 series. It brings down the overall price of the SUV by INR 7 lakh and is currently available at INR 52.9 lakh (ex-showroom pan-India). The facelift is based on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform where the upgraded version borrows the design and many other specifications from the elder sibling. Volvo expects this new entrant to lock horns with the BMW’s X3, Jaguar F-Pace, Audi Q5, and Mercedes-Benz GLE.
The external appearance of the XC60 presents a style and identity of its own. You get this updated version in four premium colours- Pine Grey, Crystal White Pearl Metallic, Onyx Black, and Maple Brown. The SUV comes with the sensational 'Thor's Hammer' LED headlamps which extend up to the chrome-finished radiator grille, vertically stacked LED taillamps, body coloured rear view mirrors, bumper, and door handles, stylish roof rails, and an integrated antenna. The ground clearance is 216 millimetres, and there is a smart alloy wheel with the tyre size 235/55R 19.
The interiors of XC60 are a class apart, and would definitely bowl you over. The seats have orthopedically designed contours elegantly covered by high-quality Nappa leather offering an upmarket feeling. The soft touch piano black dashboard comes with unlacquered driftwood highlights perfectly complimenting the tan leather interiors. The vast panoramic sunroom provides the airy experience to the riders whenever desired. The vertically laid out 9-inch Volvo’s Sensus touchscreen infotainment system is one of the best in the industry. You can divide the screen into two halves and simultaneously use the car’s OS as well as Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. The sound quality of the audio unit is remarkable with 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system. However, the touchscreen has one disadvantage where the driver needs to take their eyes off the road while operating it. !
The 1,969 cc four-cylinder twin-turbocharged diesel engine churns out a maximum power of 233 bhp@4000 rpm and a peak torque 480 Nm@1750-2250 rpm. The 8-speed Geartronic automatic transmission sends power to all the wheels for a smooth riding experience. The maximum speed 230 Kmph and the mileage is approximately 13.8 Kmpl. The car remains loaded with safety features like Adaptive Cruise Control, Pilot Assist which helps the vehicle to keep moving in the same lane without placing your hands on the steering wheel, and Lane-keeping Aid does allow the SUV to be stray.
There are many promising features in the XC60 which makes it one of the most sought-after automobile of 2018.
• The safety features of Volvo are one of the best in the class. There is a little scope of driving error and negligence in this SUV. • The ergonomic seats take care of the aesthetic and driving needs of the occupants. It comes with a unique massage function in the front ones. • The interiors are more spacious than the last model making it a perfect partner for long-distance travel.
There are a few drawbacks in the XC60 as well.
• The infotainment system lacks a navigation dial or trackpad which does not allow the driver to use it while keeping the eyes on the road. • There is some scope of improvement in the low-speed riding. The engine is also not the most refined in the segment. • The after sales service need improvement by increasing the network of the automobile company.
