Overview

Everything is going compact these days, and this craze of compactness has entered the automobile design as well. It started from the compact SUV and now, we see a new class called compact sedan. The car that fits into this role perfectly is the Volkswagen Ameo. This five-seater sedan is perfect for a small family, which is looking for an entry-level sedan with good comfort features and a superior driving quality.

Exterior

Volkswagen has taken some inspiration from its other model to build this car. If you look at the front profile of this car carefully, you will find that its nose looks similar to that of the Polo model. Although it has stubby looking back end that makes it look smaller, it can still hold 330 L of luggage, which is respectable, if you compare it with any other model that falls in the compact sedan category. Other interesting features that you will find this car include a beautifully crafted headlamp, a unique engine grille design, sporty looking tail lamp cluster, and looking alloy wheels.

Interior

The interior of this car is not super exciting, but it has the subdued elegance that characterises most of the Volkswagen models. The seats are ergonomically designed and come with an integrated headrest. One interesting fact that you will find when you sit in this car is that, in spite of its compact size, there is ample leg space for all the riders. However, the best place to sit in this car is on the driver’s seat. The seat is at a higher elevation so that you can see everything in front of you without any hindrance. The instrument panel is also well laid out in front, and you can reach all the knobs effortlessly.

Engine

This is an entry-level sedan, so do not wish anything spectacular in terms of its engine performance. However, if you compare it with its competitors in the market, you will find that it does a decent job. The 1.5 L TDI diesel engine can churn out a maximum power of 110PS, which will result in a maximum torque of 250 Nm. This four-cylinder diesel engine is perfect for this compact size car and its weight to power ratio is quite good. When you drive this car, you will find that this bit noisy at the lower as well as higher rev. However, at middle level have you will hardly a sound. In fact, we were quite surprised at the level of the insulation entry-level sedan. The acceleration rate of this car is quite good, and you will not feel any issue when you on sharp turns.

Price and Competition

Volkswagen Ameo is an entry-level compact sedan, which you can buy at a price range of Rs. 5.62 lakh (approximate) for the base model and Rs. 10.00 lakhs (approximate) for the top end model. If you are looking for alternatives to Volkswagen Ameo, then you can consider Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Xcent and Tata Zest.

Pros & Cons

Pros: Wide legroom in the front row. Features like rear AC vents, auto climate control, etc. Good quality fabric for seat cover. Cons: Second row legroom may not seem enough. Fuel efficiency is not very impressive.
