Overview

MINI the British automobile car brand, now owned by BMW (since 2000) has already released two iconic cars in the Indian market- Countryman and Cooper (Convertible). In 2007 MINI decided to introduce the third car for the India automobile lovers and launched the hugely popular Clubman in the country. It is a supermini, conceptualized and engineered by BMW and introduced under the brand MINI marquee. In 2015, the Clubman received the first upgrade bringing in comprehensive aesthetic changes. After that, in 2018, the company decided to give another midlife facelift keeping the formula similar to the 2015 model introducing a few cosmetic tweaks and converting the car into an estate in the size of a hatchback.

Exterior

MINI is famous all over the world for their introduction of smart and bold cars. However, the Clubman is the largest MINI ever produced by the company. It is 4275 millimeters long and 1801 millimeters wide, contrary to this, its older sibling Countryman was 4097 millimeters long and approximately had the same width as Clubman. What makes the Clubman spectacular is round retro headlamps with LED DRL, large chunky alloy wheels, ‘Clubman’ badging at the back, and the rear facing camera coming as a standard (you do not require an optional upgrade to have one). There is an oval grille in the front fascia with horizontal slates having chrome borders. Unlike other cars, Clubman has six doors, two for each seating row and barn doors in the boot area increasing its space.

Interior

The cabin of Clubman has many innovative features. There is an entirely new dashboard with the speedometer right in front of the driver’s eyes. You find infotainment screen, switches dials and knob everything in round shape, except for the ac vents which are somewhat rectangular. There is a fin-shaped roof antenna which makes a beautiful display of light when you lock or unlock the car. It helps to locate the vehicle amidst many vehicles in the parking area. The AC has automatic climate control, and the rear vents help to keep the passengers in the space cool during the hot, humid Indian summer. The steering wheel has many control units helping you to navigate many aspects of the car from your arms reach.

Engine

Clubman is based on the UKL2 platform and gets powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine which you also find in the Mini Cooper S. It packs a powerful 192bhp of maximum power and 280Nm of torque generating from as low as 1250rpm. The motor remains mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission gearbox powering the front wheels. The car has rapid acceleration and zooms from 0-100 Kmph in just 7.2 seconds, and the maximum speed is 228 Kmph.

Price and Competition

The Clubman is available at an exciting price range of INR 40.30 lakh (Ex-Showroom). It offers fierce competition to Volvo XC40, Jaguar XE, BMW X1, and Audi Q3.

Pros and Cons

         Clubman has a powerful engine packing a hefty punch of 192 bhp. You can get all the features of an estate in a hatchback.

         It has a surprisingly large cargo space of 360 Litres considering a hatchback.

         Since the car can be upgraded to all-wheel-drive, in spite of being lightweight, it remains stable on the road.

         The overall room of the car is small.
