The German automaker Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 2018 version of the compact SUV GLA for the global market at Detroit Motor Show in January. It was made available for the Indian automobile lovers during July of the same year. The facelifted GLA remain based on the MFA2 platform which also underpins the 2019 A-Class hatchback. It has four variants- 220 d 4Matic, 200 Sport, 200 d Sport and 200 d Style. This entry level SUV from Mercedes-Benz debuted in the year 2013, and then in 2017, it got the first mid-life upgrade. The second-generation GLA has super-stylish looks and equally capable engine to capture the mind of the automobile lovers.
The exteriors of GLA do not come with many cosmetics tweaks and looks quite similar to the 2017 upgrade. You can see a sloping A-pillar with compressed glass area, big chunky wheels offering high ground clearance. The car has a redesigned wider grille with horizontal slats in between bearing the company logo at the centre. Angular headlamps bear L-shaped daytime running lamps (DRL). At the rear end, you find ‘stardust’ effect tail lamps and the eye-catching silver skid plates. You can own the car in eleven attractive shades-Cosmos Black Metallic, Lunar Blue Metallic, Jupiter Red, Polar Silver Metallic, Cocoa Brown Metallic, and Mountain Grey Metallic being the popular ones.
The cabin of the face-lifted GLA comes with a refined, sophisticated look. The central console has well-spaced out controls, round ac vents look like a propeller and have a silver knitted pattern running around the circumference. However, there are some hard plastic sections on the lower edge of the cabin. The front seats are electrically adjustable and offer firm support on all the sides. It has enough legroom and excellent lumbar and thigh support. You can also fold the seat in 60:40 ratios and flip them from within when you need to access the boot area. The large panoramic sunroof makes the SUV feel quite airy. The 8-inch touchscreen display has integrated Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
There are three engine options (two diesel and one petrol) in GLA. The 200 Sports petrol variant churns out a maximum power output of 181 bhp@5500 rpm and a peak torque of 300 Nm@1200-1400 rpm. The 220 d 4MATIC trim generates 168 bhp@3400-4000 rpm power and 350 Nm@1400-3400 rpm. All the engines remain mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission gearbox delivering power to all the wheels. The maximum speed of this SUV is 225 Kmph and 218 Kmph in the petrol and diesel model respectively.
The prices range for the Mercedes-Benz GLA starts from INR 32.33 Lakh (ex-showroom) for the 200 d Style and goes up to INR 38.64 (ex-showroom) in the 220 d 4MATIC. This SUV takes on the likes of Audi Q3, Volvo XC40, and BMW X1.
There are several advantages to owning Mercedes-Benz GLA.
• The SUV has super stylish looks with newly designed grille and bumper. • There are ample safety features in the GLA including multiple airbags, electronic stability program, hill start assist, tyre pressure monitoring system, and traction control. • It comes with a punchy engine, high road clearance, and mild off-roading abilities.
The drawbacks of GLA include.
• The sloping A-Pillars of the car makes the cabin feel cramped. • The rear seats do not have good thigh support like the front ones. • The engine though powerful makes noise which is not expected in a premium SUV.
Finally, we can say that at INR 32.33 Lakh Mercedes-Benz GLA is a good option as an entry level premium SUV. You get the promise of German Engineering at a comfortable price range.
