British Car manufacturer, 'Jaguar', released an advanced sports saloon ‘XE’ during the October 2014 Paris Auto Show. The sedan was designed by the renowned Scottish car designer and Director of Design for Jaguar Cars, Ian Callum. After formally starting its production at the Jaguar Land Rover's Solihull plant, the car became globally available by 2015. Release in India, however, got delayed by a year, and the company introduced this premium vehicle at the Auto Expo 2016. The current saloon is also locally assembled in India and reputed all across the globe for its bonded and riveted aluminium monocoque structure. It is available in three exciting variants-: Pure, Prestige and Portfolio.

Jaguar XE has a brilliant exterior design with a long hood, short boot, along with a comfortable cabin. In India this sedan is available in eight exciting shades- Rhodium Silver, Caesium Blue, Ultimate Black, and Polaris White being the popular ones. The striking feature in the front fascia is the signature headlamps with ‘J-blade’ DRLs and prominent chrome surround grille with the Red Growler badge in the centre. The highlights of the side face include the chrome surrounds on the windows and the Red Growler badge at the centre of the wheel caps. The rear end bears a large tail lamp with unique LED cluster which looks excellent at night.

The cabin of Jaguar XE is as impressive as it’s exterior. The dashboard is in beige and black colour scheme with top-notch material used in upholstery adding a touch of sophistication. There is a ‘Theater of dreams’ floating gear knob rising from the lower console as soon as you switch on the sedan giving character to it. Other premium features include dual-zone climate control AC with twin rear vents for the comforts of the backend passengers, massive panoramic sunroof, and 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with smartphone integration facilities. The audio system has 10-speaker Meridian surround sound system turning the car into a mini auditorium.

Beating at the heart of the Jaguar XE is a 2.0-liter Turbocharged Petrol Engine generating 237 bhp@5500 rpm maximum power and a substantial torque 340 Nm@1750 rpm. The diesel motor is also available in this saloon; however, the figures are not as impressive as the petrol variant. In both the fuel types the engine remains mated to an 8-Speed automatic transmission gearbox supplying power to the rear wheels. The car has rapid acceleration and can sprint to 100 Kmph in just 6.8 seconds and the highest speed being 250 Kmph.

Price and Competition

The premium saloon is available in India in different variants, and the price range starts from INR 39.73 Lakh (Ex-showroom, New Delhi). It takes on the likes of BMW 3, Audi A4, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Pros and Cons

• Jaguar XE has one of the most potent engines intelligently paired with an 8-Speed automatic transmission gearbox gliding through the highways. • The steering is easy to handle and helps you manoeuvre through narrow turns and busy roads. • The saloon has a stylish exterior surface making it pride to drive this vehicle. • The infotainment system lacks Android Auto or Apple CarPlay connectivity which is not expected in an INR 40 lakh car. • Since the seats are much lower, ingress and egress can be challenging; the knee room is also less at the rear end.

In the end, we can say Jaguar XE is an excellent saloon with a very enthusiastic drivetrain. However, it lacks on the finesse compared with the German and Italian rivals.
